Over the next two weeks I learned to stop being surprised to hear Jessie’s voice on the phone, or catch his longing glances as he waited for me to finish cleaning up after Spit closed. His body still enthralled me, but I was just as eager for our long conversations. We talked about life, about dreams, about the unique beauty of desert sunsets. But still there would be times when he seemed to be holding back. He would try to cover it up with a glib laugh and a joke but I had learned enough of him to realize his lingering pain. I knew he had come from a small town on the Oregon coast and that he rarely visited. Other than that, his past before his brief years in Arizona were mystery.

It was another Saturday night and Spit was setting up on stage. I stowed my purse in my locker and heard gruff male anger. I paused, peering into the dark hallway. I recognized Mike hunched over the payphone. He ran his hands through his hair and tried to speak quietly but was evidently in the throes of an intense conversation. I wasn’t trying to listen, but there was no way to move past him discreetly.

“No, fuck that! I already work my goddamn hands to the bone for you every second I’m not playing.” He slammed the phone down and cursed. I hung back, uncertain. Suddenly he spun and saw me. Mike always seemed like such a mild, mellow family man but in that instant he terrified me. His eyes held a savage glint and his jaw was set. He did not acknowledge me and instead stalked back through the bar and hopped on the stage.

Traci wandered into the break room, her eye brows raised. “What’s with our drummer? He seems little off. Barked at me like a dog and then swallowed three shots like they were water.”

“I don’t know. He was yelling at someone on the phone.”

Traci shrugged. “Oh well. Here we are on another Saturday night. You’re out at Jessie’s tonight?”

“I suppose.”

“Okay, then I won’t wait up.”

The crowd at Spit seemed to grow every time Poison Pen took the stage. Gavin had already been hit with a citation. He’d had a screeching match the fire marshal who tersely said he would shut the place down next time Spit exceeded capacity. A few burly bouncers had been hired to keep order and turn people away. I couldn’t help but notice that many of the fans who found their way next to the stage looked like music video vixens.

As Poison Pen began their first rollicking set of the night, Mike’s drumming seemed a little off. His playing was manic, wild. As he took the microphone Jessie briefly turned and frowned at him. Stretch and Eddie took their pace up a notch to match and Jessie launched into the first song.

I watched him. I knew he loved performing. His eyes were closed and he gripped that microphone as if were part of him.
